with regard to the level of awareness of the population in the Republic of Moldova about the migration phenomena and the acquaintance with the opportunities offered by the Hot Line of the International Center "La Strada".
In May 2005 the International Center „La Strada” has conducted a public opinion poll with regard to the level of awareness of the population in the Republic of Moldova about the migration phenomena and the acquaintance with the opportunities offered by the Hot Line of the Center. The results of the poll denote the following situation:
To the question „How do you appreciate the fact that a large number of Moldovan people leave the country?” the answers have distributed among approval, disapproval and ambiguity. By this, circa 21,3% of respondents stated that it is good or very good that they leave the country, and 25,3 consider that it is not good at all; 41,3% think that it is not good, but are not against it, and 10,5% answered that are rather against. At the same time, to the question whether plan to leave the country 56,3% recognized that YES, and only 28,3 answered NO. Referring to the reasons of leaving the country, most of the people are doing it with the purpose to work abroad (80,8%) and studying (29,8%). Other reasons: visits (33,3%), to live together with the relatives, friends (18,6%), marriage (12,9%), tourism (11,5%) and to live with the family – parents, brothers and sisters, spouse, children (8,6% each).
Another question of the poll refers to the fact how well informed is the population about this phenomenon and its risks. The poll reveals that only 36% of respondents know the phone number of the Hot Line of the International Center „La Strada” 0 800 77777, as compared to 58% which know it. Those who know it, answered that there exists a phone „which one can call when there are some problems” (23,2%), „which one can call and get information how to leave the country” (24,9%), „which offers information about the trafficking in human beings” (15,3%); 6,2% each answered that there is „a phone line which offers information about jobs abroad”, „which informs how to deal when you get trafficked” or „which can call the women which got trafficked, to get help”; 4% consider that there is a phone line „to which women, men and children can call if they got trafficked” and 2,3% – that there exists a phone line „at which one can get contact information of different embassies”. In spite to these, 72,8 of the total number of respondents answered YES to the question „Do you think you would call the Hot Line if needed?”, and only 12,5 % answered NO. To the question „In which case would you call the Hot Line?” the answers have referred to the reasons of leaving the country and the one of trafficking in human beings. By this, 28,3% would call in case they would like to leave the country, and 26,5% – if would not know enough about how to leave the country, and other 13,8% would call if at the moment they would need information regarding the traveling abroad; 21,1% would call if they would get into a tricky situation, with a risk to get trafficked, and 11,5% – if any relative, friend, acquaintance traveled abroad and do not let know about themselves. Significant is the fact that 3,3% would call if would require general information about trafficking in human beings. It has to be mentioned that the percentage of those which did not answer or did not know what to answer vary from 1,5 to 15,5.
In the poll participated 400 young persons (up to 30 years old). The demographic breakdown of the participants: 63% women and 37% men; age: up to 18 years old – 46%, from 19 up to 22 years old – 32% and from 23 up to 30 years old – 21%; education: 39,5% – general school, lyceum, 16% – 9 years of general school, 15% – university, 13% – higher special education (college), 8,3 – incomplete higher education, 7,3% – vocational training.
